BASIC HOTSPOT:
Smartphone:
A Hotspot is a device that connects to near-by Cellular 4G-LTE Network and provides your own WiFi Network for your devices to connect to.
A 4G-LTE Data plan with a Sim card is required. That should already be available from your phone service provider.
The most basic hotspot is your smartphone. Your phone becomes a WiFi access point, and you can define the WiFi name (SSID) and password so others around you (Laptops/tablets) and yourself can connect to your phone and access internet.
Using your phone has limitations: performance is not that great, its hard on the battery , and you cannot attach external LTE MIMO antennas.

HOTSPOT DEVICES:
Those devices are dedicated to be real hotspots with multiple functions. They connect to near-by 4G-LTE-5G cellular Networks on multiple LTE Freq. bands and generate your own WiFi Network. They also have 1 or 2 LTE Sim cards to connect to 2 Cellular Network
( backup or you can switch them).
They usualy have dual WiFi radios , 2.4 & 5Ghz and you can connect External LTE MIMO antennas to get better range, (TS9 connector) and an Ethernet RJ45 port for direct laptop connection, or even as another LTE internet source to your main router.
A dedicated Data plan with Sim cards are required.
This kind of hotspots do have much better performance for streaming and even video conferencing.
(if the Cellular tower is in an acceptable range)
